Peppermint Foot Soak - a great DIY Gift

There is no doubt that the holidays are a magical time. But they can also be a very expensive time of the year. A great way to save money is to make meaningful gifts from the heart. This Peppermint Foot Soak is made with all natural ingredients and would be a welcomed gift by so many people in your life.

Benefits of Foot Baths
With the stress that becomes part of daily life, we often forget to relax and take care of our bodies.
“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” – Jim Rohn
Foot baths are incredible for helping to relieve rheumatic pains and aches, excessive perspiration, revive tired feet (and a tired body in full) and can be a great way to pamper your often forgotten feet.

What you need:
– 1 cup Epsom Salt
– 1 cup Himalayan Sea Salt
– 10-15 drops Peppermint Essential Oil (therapeutic grade)
– 1 16 ounce Mason Jar

Directions:
1. Add 1 cup of epsom salt to a small bowl. Add 10-15 drops of peppermint oil to the salt. Mix well.
2. To add the ‘candy cane’ effect, add 1/3cup of epsom salt followed by 1/3cup of himalayan pink sea salt in a glass Mason Jar. Rotate until you have used a cup of each (6 layers).
3. Store in a dark cool place.
4. Add a tsp to your warm foot bath, and swish around a bit before putting your feet in.
5. Soak feet for 15-20 minutes.
If you are giving this as a holiday gift, write the directions for use on a homemade gift card (steps #3-5) and add a ribbon and candy cane for that extra touch. Save time and double (or more) this recipe to make multiple gifts at once!

Fills 1 two cup wide mouth jar.

25 Real Food Eggcellent Recipes

Pastured eggs have a long list of health benefits. True pastured hens are free to roam, enjoy the sunshine and eat bugs and grass. Eggs from pastured hens are a true superfood! They contain much higher amounts of vitamins than eggs from caged hens, and they taste delicious. I do my best to eat eggs daily, but it can be monotonous if I don’t get creative with the ways in which I prepare them. I have gathered 25 delicious and ‘egg’cellent recipes to help make eating eggs daily more exciting. I recommend using this must-have Cast Iron skillet when cooking eggs.

newhouse

I’m originally from the Greater Toronto Area (Canada) and moved to Vermont, USA eight years ago for school. There I met my husband, had my son and gained a desire for country living. In July of this year my young family sold our home, left our jobs and hopped north of the border. We knew that country living was what we wanted, but the price tag was something we just couldn’t afford. To get an acre or two of land in the Greater Toronto Area is pricey to say the least.  We ended up finding the perfect property; two private acres with fantastic access to main roadways for commuting, yet in a small and quaint town with a great community feel. The house needed a lot of work and we were up for the job. On November 1st we took possession of the home and renos started right away.

pillowcases

Upcycle_Pillowcases
We are in the middle of a move and have unearthed dozens of old pillowcases. My husband asked me whether he should toss them and I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. While we have zero use for them now, I just knew that they must be able to be used for something, or I could at least salvage some of the fabrics for a different project.

I did some digging around and here is a lit of 15 fantastic ways to up cycle an old pillowcase! I will definitely be making many of these soon.

1. Pillowcase Garment Bag– Use pillowcase garment bags as extra closet organizers. Drape pillowcases on hangers over occasional-use items, such as throws, seasonal bedding, and formal dresses. Check it out.

2. Kids Art Smock– Let the kids have fun and don’t worry about ruining their outfit. Turn a pillowcase into an art smock with this simple tutorial.

3. Sleep Mat– Whether you plan on having lots of company and have few beds, or your kids have sleepovers often, these simple sleep mats are just what you need! This simple tutorial shows you how it’s done.

4. Hanger Covers– This project shows you how to make cute covers for old hangers. They are perfect for use with delicate outfits such as knits and dresses.

5. Pillowcase Dresses– What little girl wouldn’t look absolutely adorable in one of these! Check them out here.

6. Shoe Cleaning Bag– If you have a pair of sneakers that need to be washed, toss them in an old pillowcase and put them in the washing machine for a gentle cycle. The pillowcase protects both the shoe and the laces from any damage.

7. Road Trip Pillow Cases– This is such a cute idea. Turn a regular pillowcase into the perfect pillow tote for all of your travel must haves. Learn more here.

8. Pillowcase Shopping Bag– This pillow case has been cleverly turned into a great reusable bag. Why not try it yourself here!

0999. Pillowcase Adult Skirt– This tutorial looks super simple, and if you pick the right patterned pillowcase you will have yourself a beautiful homemade skirt for nothing!

10. DIY Laundry Hamper– This tutorial shows you how to store your dirty laundry in a beautiful way!

11. Trick or Treat Bag– As a kid I didn’t trick or treat with any fancy Halloween bags, just an old pillowcase. Why? It wasn’t because my parents wouldn’t buy us a themed bag, but it was because they just weren’t big enough to do the trick! Here’s a fun way to dress up an old pillowcase for Halloween.

12. Potato Sack Race– Need an idea for some summer fun with the kids? Grab the old pillowcases and have some potato sack races in the backyard for free!

13. No-sew Pillowcase dress– For those of you with limited sewing skills (like me!) here is a tutorial for a no-sew dress.

Somehow my son is already 6 months old and sitting up on his own, playing and eating solids like a big kid! I love keeping him busy during the day and giving him new experiences. Since I would consider myself a fairly crafty person, I wanted to do some fun arts and crafts projects that are textile and allow him to get messy and explore while he plays.

Painting was one of the first activities that came to mind.
But the next thought was how everything my six month old touches ends up in his mouth.

The last thing I wanted was my son to be painting and decide he should learn more about this new product by sticking it in his mouth. And even though children’s craft supplies are now labeled ‘non-toxic’ they do not have my trust. Read more about the toxic truth about children’s non-toxic art supplies here.

So after doing some research and finding a variety of homemade non-toxic paint recipes online I tried out a few using only ingredients I would be 100% comfortable with Quinn ingesting. After trial and error, here is my recipe that worked the best. And even though he is just six months and I do not feed him grains or sugar, I would much rather this touch his lips than a store bought paint (although I still kept his fingers away from his mouth as much as I could)!

What you Need:

  •  1/3 Cup Wheat Flour
  •  2 tbsp Cane Sugar
  •  2 tsp Sea Salt
  •  All- Natural Food coloring from edible plants
  •  4 small Mason JarsDirections:1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt and water. Stir until solids are dissolved.
    2. Turn on heat to medium and stir constantly while the paint thickens. When it comes to a consistency that you are looking for, remove from heat.
    3. Pour evenly into mason jars (I chose 4 to do 4 different colors).
    4. Add a few drops of color and mix well. Place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before use. This helps set the food coloring so that it does not stain little fingers if this is used as a finger paint.
    5. Let the kids have some safe fun!

FACECREAM

“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” — Jim Rohn

What you put ON your body is just as important as what you put IN it. Sixty percent of what we apply to our skin is absorbed into our bodies. Our skin is our largest organ in our body and it’s permeable.

Personal care products contain large volumes of chemicals, both natural and synthetic. While not all are considered dangerous,  cosmetic makers are not required to assess how much of these chemicals gets into your body and what the risks might be. Thereis no governing body responsible for assessing the safety of your cumulative exposures to cosmetic ingredients. In fact, there are more than 80,000 synthetic chemicals in the marketplace but only 5 percent have ever been tested!

“Medical research indicates that many cosmetic ingredients include carcinogenic (cancer-causing) substances and that they do indeed penetrate the skin and wind up in our blood. This means that we are exposing ourselves internally, to a whole host of chemicals that would never be allowed to be ingested as a food or a drug but are winding up in our body nonetheless.” source

Lemon Skin moisturizer ingredients

– ⅓ cup coconut oil
– ¼ cup shea butter
– 2 tsp vitamin e oil
– 5-8 drops therapeutic grade lemon oil

Coconut Oil: Coconut Oil is naturally moisturizing and works wonders on individuals with dry skin. Studies have shown that coconut oil can improve the moisture and lipid content of the skin.

Shea Butter: Shea Butter has a rich, luxurious texture that penetrates deep to condition and moisturize every type of skin. As a natural derivative of the karite trees that grow in Western and Central Africa, Shea Butter is a wonderful emollient that’s perfect for daily use.

Vitamin E Oil: Vitamin E Oil moisturizers dry skin and helps to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Lemon Oil: Lemon has been widely used to cleanse skin, reduce wrinkles, and combat acne

Directions
1. Put all ingredients into a mixing bowl.
2. Blend with a hand mixer to whip consistency.
3. Place into container glass container and store in a cool and dark place.
I use this lotion primarily in the winter an apply it in the evenings. The reason is because of the phototoxic properties on Lemon Oil. Read more below.

*Citrus oils are considered to be phototoxic essential oil. This means that the compounds can become toxic when exposed to direct sunlight. When used in skin care products, it is recommended to avoid exposure to the sun within 24 hours. The oil is extremely diluted in this lotion and therefore you are not applying much of the oil per application. That being said- it is best to be applied at night and not before a day in the sun.
